Classification The brief original description for the specimens from the late Miocene (Messinian?) of Gallozzole in the Casino Basin, Italy, by Pantanelli (1877: 4) indicates a huge shell with a height of 42 mm and a diameter of 55 mm and 4.5 whorls, a depressed spire, and a round, oblique aperture with thickened and reflected peristome (see also Pantanelli 1879: 314). The illustrations in De Stefani (1880: 36, pl. 3, fig. 6) moreover show a covered umbilicus. It was listed as Galactochilus by Boettger & Wenz (1921: 18) and Wenz (1923: 497-498). The characteristics of the protoconch unfortunately remain unknown to us, and so we cannot safely confirm this classification. [details]
