Nomenclature Boss (1982) suggested emendation of this subfamily name to Xylophagainae in order to avoid the homonymy with the family name Xylophagidae Fallén, 1810 (based on Xylophagus Meigen, 1803, in Diptera), but this was never formally presented to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature for formal approval.
