Nomenclature Replacement name for Turbonilla stricta Pallary, 1904, non Clessin 1902. This name was discussed by van Aartsen (1981) who noted that according to Nordsieck (1972: 124) there are two species which have been mixed in the description of Turbonilla stricta Pallary, 1904. One of these two species, about 7 mm long with rather convex whorls, has been renamed pallaryi Nordsieck, 1972 because of preoccupation of the name stricta by Verrill, 1873. .However, the other smaller species (about 4.5 mm and only slightly convex whorls) was called pseudostricta n. sp. by Nordsieck,1972. Turbonilla stricta Pallary, 1904 had already been called pallaryi by Dautzenberg (1910: 95) because of preoccupation of the name stricta by Clessin (1902). Therefore van Aartsen introduced the new name Turbonilla syrtensis nom. nov. for pallaryi sensu Nordsieck, 1972 and used the name pallaryi Dautzenberg, 1910 = Turbonilla pseudostricta Nordsieck, 1972 for the smaller species.

Formally, this is not correct: Turbonilla pallaryi Dautzenberg, 1910, Turbonilla pallaryi Nordsieck, 1972 and Turbonilla syrtensis van Aartsen, 1981 are all objective synonyms of T. stricta Pallary, 1904, and usage for one or another of the two species involved should be stabilized by a lectotype designation for T. stricta Pallary, 1904 (preferably of the smaller species, which fits Pallary's description). For the time being, van Aartsen (1981) is followed and the name T. syrtensis is used for Turbonilla stricta sensu Nordsieck, 1972, the larger of the two species. For the other species, the name T. pseudostricta was proposed as "n. sp.", not a replacement name (contrary to the statement in Peñas & Rolán, 1997), and is considered a junior subjective synonym of T. stricta Pallary, 1904.  [details]
