ClassificationHelix aquensis Serres (1829: 98-, pl. 1, figs 17–18) was described from the Tertiary of Aix-en-Provence from specimens with preserved shell according to Serres, but Mathéron (1843: 197-) claimed that Serres described internal moulds and provided a new diagnosis. This was overlooked or rejected by Wenz (1923: 251-) and Pfeffer (1930: 171-), who placed the species in Zonites (Aegopis), respectively Archaeozonites. Pfeffer (1930: 218-, pl. 17, fig. 19) then described Galactochilus aquensis as a new species. Truc (1971a: 84, 85 and 1971b: 293–296, figs 5, 13) synonymized Helix aquensis Serres and Galactochilus aquensis Pfeffer, as well as Helix beaumonti Mathéron 1843 (: 200, pl. 33, figs 18–19) and Helix galloprovincialis Mathéron 1843 (: 198, pl. 33, fig. 7). Nordsieck (2016: 128-, figs 3, 4, 6, 7) redescribed and figured the species as understood by Mathéron (1843) and Pfeffer (1930) as Galactochilus aquensis (Serres) from an incompletely preserved specimen. A remnant of surface ornamentation shows strong, widely spaced spiral furrows which are unlike any of the ornamentation observed in Galactochiloides or Agalactochilus. Genus assignment and synonymy need reconsideration and should ideally be based on better preserved material. [details] Type locality Aix-en-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, France [details]
