Nomenclature When he established Cochlicopidae, Pilsbry (1900) did not justify his action. Later, he
(Pilsbry, 1908 [in 1907–1908]: 309) treated Cionella Jeffreys, 1830, as a synonym of Cochlicopa and Cochlicopidae and Cionellidae as synonyms of Ferussaciidae. Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) noted that the name Cionellidae was still occasionally used, especially in North America, but used Cochlicopidae as the valid name. A Google Scholar search performed in 2016 found 31 records for Cionellidae after 2005 and 304 for Cochlicopidae: there is a clearly a prevailing usage of the latter name, which Bouchet et al. (2017) conserved under ICZN Art. 40.2, with the precedence of Cionellidae.
