Status Crassostrea gryphoides is a fossil European species. Its name was frequently misapplied to a Recent species from India. The Recent counterpart there was described as var. cuttackensis by Newton & Smith (1912) and we follow Huber (2015: 374) in using that name for the farmed Indian species reported as gryphoides [details]
