Nomenclature Historically, the name Tritonium was established independently by two authors with different taxonomical extensions:
1. Tritonium O.F. Müller, 1776, was established for a mixture of gastropods from the Danish coasts, including mainly muricids and buccinids, but also a species of Aporrhaidae. The type species of Tritonium, selected by Stewart (1926), is Buccinum undatum Linnaeus, 1758, which makes Tritonium O.F. Müller, 1776, an objective synonym of Buccinum.
2. Tritonium Röding, 1798, was established for a mixture of gastropods, including mainly Ranellidae and Bursidae. Cossmann (1903) selected Murex tritonis Linnaeus, 1758, as type species of Tritonium Röding, 1798, thus making it an objective synonym of Charonia Gistel, 1847.
For names introduced in Tritonium, it is often not clear which Tritonium was meant. In assigning names in WoRMS to one or the other, the following criteria have been used. Tritonium Müller is inferred if the genus was attributed to Müller, placed in Muricidae or Buccinidae, or associated with species currently classified in those families. Tritonium Röding is inferred if the genus was attributed to Röding or to Link (1807), placed in Bursidae or Ranellidae (or one of its synonyms, e.g., Cymatiidae, Tritoniidae), or associated with taxa currently classified in those families.
