Authority Woodward (1871) referred to a publication by Conrad (1871), which, however, appeared two months later (4 April 1871) than his own (February 1871). He considered "Neritina Ortoni, Conrad" a junior synonym of "Neritina pupa, Gabb". Since Neritina Ortoni was later considered a valid species, the name is available from its first publication as junior synonym, and Woodward (1871) is its author (see ICZN Arts 11.6.1 and 50.7).
