Taxonomy There is currently debate regarding which is the valid name for this species. Glöer (2018, 2019) and Sands et al. (2020) consider Theodoxus baeticus (Lamarck, 1822) as a valid species and synonymous with Theodoxus meridionalis, based on examination of syntypes and genetic data of topotypic material. Whereas there is general agreement that the same species can be found in Spain and Sicily, Martínez-Ortí & Osca (2023) found specimens from the type locality of T. baeticus which were identified as T. fluviatilis (Linnaeus, 1758) from molecular data, therefore consider the taxon a nomen dubium and reinstated T. meridionalis as the valid name.
