Type material 29 specimens labelled as "sowinskii" [sic] were found in the Starobogatov collection in the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg (ZIN). Although not unambiguously stated, it is likely to be the type series of Pyrgula sowinskyi Logvinenko & Starobogatov, 1969. The material was collected from the western part of the South Caspian Sea close to the Kura river mouth and Salyan berth at a depth of 88 m. No other identified material of that species has been found in ZIN. [details]

Synonymy Several of the probable paratypes match Clathrocaspia gmelinii and are referred to that species; the rest is considered synonymous with Clathrocaspia pallasii.
