Taxonomy This is the type species of Simnia Risso, 1826. The lectotype (Arnaud, 1978) has been shown (Dolin & Ledon, 2002) to be a juvenile specimen of Simnia spelta (Linnaeus, 1758) which makes Neosimnia Fischer, 1884 an objective synonym of Simnia. The name has nevertheless been broadly used (e.g. D'Angelo & Gargiullo, 1978: 126; Lorenz & Fehse, 2009) for a deep-water Mediterranean species recently described as Xandarovula aetheria Nappo, 2024 [details]
