Synonymy Though not explicitly stated, this species was obviously introduced as replacement name for the supposed homonym Cyprina arenaria [sic] Meek & Hayden, 1857, "non Forbes". However, the name Carena arenaria used by Forbes (1856), as well as by Morris (1854), are nomina nuda. It was validly introduced by Wood (1877). Moreover, Meek & Hayden actually used the spelling "arenarea". Thus, C. dakotensis is a junior objective synonym of C. arenarea Meek & Hayden, 1857.
