Status According to Blanckenhorn (1901), this species (among several others) is a synonym of "Mactra subtruncata Mont." [?= Spisula subtruncata (da Costa, 1778)]. However, he introduced a new variety (elongata), which would be a junior objective synonym. Probably Blanckenhorn did not intend the variety as separate taxonomic unit, but rather as a describing term. Moreover, he doubted the Oligocene age stated by Mayer-Eymar and considered the material to be Plio-Pleistocene. Revision required! [details]
