Type species Stoliczka (1871, Cretaceous fauna of southern India, ": xxii, 474) had designated Placuna jurensis F.A. Roemer, 1835, as type species of Placunopsis, but subsequent authors have treated Morris & Lycett's Placuna jurensis as a misidentification. Cox (1969 [in Moore, ed.] Treatise on invertebrate paleontology, N1: 380) cited the type species as "Placuna fibrosa Laube, 1867 [= P. jurensis (non Roemer sp.) Morris & Lycett; ICZN pending]"; no application was ever submitted to the ICZN. Todd & Palmer (2002, Palaeontology, 45(3): 489-490) identified Morris & Lycett's Placuna jurensis as Placunopsis fuersichi Todd & Palmer, 2002, but judged that it was not advisable to fix a type species under Art. 70.3. Instead, they stated that they would petition the ICZN to fix Ostrea inaequalis Phillips, 1829 [= Placuna fibrosa] as type species, but no application was submitted. [details]
