Taxonomy The name Patella crenata Gmelin, 1791 was first misapplied by d'Orbigny (1840) to the Canarian species currently known as P. ordinaria Mabille, 1888, and is often misquoted as "Patella crenata d'Orbigny, 1840". Christiaens (1974: 1323-1324) synonymized many taxa with P. candei and introduced the so-called P. candei complex containing four subspecies among which the misidentified P. candei crenata mainly from the Canary Islands [details]
