Original description The genus was first validly introduced by Salter (1862, Notes on the North Staffordshire Coal Fossils, p. 293, 294) by referring Avicula quadrata J. de C. Sowerby, 1840 (type species by monotypy) to it. Other species were listed doubtfully (modiolaris) or as nomen nudum (browniana). In the same year, Salter (1862, in Hull: The geology of the country around Wigan; priority not established) introduced the genus with a description, but without originally included species (as browniana is included with doubt in Anthracoptera). [details]
