Molluscan faunas have been studied from cored boreholes in the Weald and Hampshire and related to previous ostracod work. Nine molluscan associations are recognised which are interpreted as representing different salinities. Marine associations are matched with peaks of marine transgressions, and freshwater associations with regressive phases of the sea. Correlations are made with the northern basin marine sequence. The Cinder Bed transgression is seen to extend above and below the horizon of the Cinder Bed Member. The base of the Wealden Beds should be drawn lithostratigraphically at the base of the Upper Purbeck, and a new informal division, the Fairlight division, of strictly local significance, is proposed for "Fairlight Clays" of authors. A formal lithostratigraphical classification is proposed
