Classification Originally established as an order of Pelecypoda, containing the suborders Solenomyacea, Anatinacea, Myacea, Ensiphonacea or Tubicolae, and Adesmacea. Ranked as suborder by Haas (1929: 19); as subclass by Winckworth (1932: 247); as superorder by Amler (1999: 244). Spelling emended by Keen (1963: 93) to (subclass) Anomalodesmata which became in widespread use.Current results in bivalve phylogeny indicate that Anomalodesmata are probably a monophyletic group (Dreyer et al., 2003; Taylor et al., 2007) but nested within Euheterodonta. This provides support to what is proposed by Giribet & Wheeler (2003) to merely merge Anomalodesmata into Heterodonta s.l. (note that Tree of Life still uses Anomalodsmata with equal rank to Pteriomorpha, Paleoheterodonta, Heterodonta...).
It is helpful to reflect that these superfamilies go together and therefore keep the name Anomalodesmata as an order of the Euheterodonta, but the usage of a "subclass Anomalodesmata" is to be abandoned. [details]
