Taxonomy Wilke et al. (2000), based on sequences of the COI gene, considered the North European Hydrobia neglecta as a geographical subspecies of the Mediterranean H. acuta. This is a puzzling distribution since the extensive coastline between the southern entrance of the English channel and the strait of Gibraltar is occupied by a different species H. glyca (Servain, 1880) [details]
