Synonymy Wenz (1923) listed the name in synonymy of "Melanopsis antiqua antiqua Férussac, 1823". However, that name is not available from Férussac (1823), who obviously did not intend it as species-group name. The name became available from Pallary (1916) who associated the name with an illustration in Férussac (1823: pl. 8, fig. 2). Consequently, Melanopsis flammulata De Stefani, 1877 is the oldest available name for the taxon. [details]Synonymy Wenz (1929: 2663) considered the taxon as a junior synonym of "Melanospis antiqua Férussac", which is not an available name and, in turn, is listed a synonym of M. affinis (Esu & Girotti 1975).
