Synonymy Nordsieck (1968) and Fretter & Graham (1976) use the name E. conica Lamarck, 1801 for a Mediterranean form, and E. rosea Bell, 1824 for an Atlantic species. Other authors treat both names as synonyms (Gilbert, 1957; Van Regteren Altena et al., 1965) and give priority to the oldest of the two names, E. conica. In a recent publication, Piani (1984) stated that E. conica Lamarck, 1801 actually refers to E. fissura (Linnaeus, 1758), while E. rosea Bell, 1824 refers to E. conica Schumacher, 1817. The latter name can not be used, since it is preoccupied by Lamarck, 1801, which leaves E. rosea Bell, 1824 as the valid name. [details]
