Nomenclature Beck listed Gibbus Montfort in the synonymy of Gibbulina, and some authors have considered Gibbulina to be a substitute name or an unjustified emendation of Gibbus [and therefore an invalid name], in which case they would have the same type species, i.e. Helix lyonetiana Pallas, 1774 [Spicilegia zoologica, 10: 33; an originally included species], a streptaxid from Mauritius. However, Gray, 1847 [November], Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 15: 176, designated as type species Helix infundibuliformis d'Orbigny, 1835 [Magasin de Zoologie. 5(62): 21; also an originally included species], and the name Gibbulina is currently in use for the South American gastrocoptid Gibbulina infundibuliformis (d'Orbigny, 1835).
