Authority Montagu treated in 1803 only M. stultorum and in 1808 he described a species M. cinerea that had a lot of resemblance with the first. Nowadays M. cinerea is treated as a subspecies of M. corallina according to Janssen et al. (1984). [details]

Authority Linnaeus, 1758 has descibed Cardium corallinumas well as Cardium stultorum , the first hails from the mediterranean, the second from West-Europe.
According to Lucas (1974a), Poutiers (1978), McKay & Smith (1979) and Van Aartsen et al. (1984) these two species are synonyms. When two synonyms are published simultanious than is "the relative priority determined by the action of the first reviser " according to ICZN art. 24.2. But in this case it is not easy to determine who is the first reviser. This and the discussion of Dodge (1952) in mind the species name Mactra corallina should be better. This name is first mentionned in Linnaeus' Systema Naturae, but ICZN does not recognize page priority. [details]
