Taxonomic remark Name based on references to Lister (1770: pl. 1058 fig. 8), Favanne (1780: pl. 65 fig. 5; 1784: 20) and Chemnitz (1786: pl. 121, figs 1039-1040). Lister’s illustration is unrecognizable. Favanne’s appear to be copied from it, and illustrate a shell said to be from New Holland [= Australia]. Given the date (1774) of the discovery of New Caledonia by Cook, Lister certainly did not illustrate in 1770 a New Caledonia species of Placostylus. Chemnitz’s illustration is of a shell said to be from New Caledonia and bought from Solander, who received his shells from Captain Cook. The material was thus probably originally part of the same lot as the specimen illustrated by Martyn as Limax fibratus. This specimen is not present in the part of the Chemnitz collection preserved in the Zoologisk Museum, Copenhagen, and the lack of details on Chemnitz’ figure renders the interpretation of the name uncertain: it could represent P. fibratus (most likely, also based on circumstantial evidence) or P. porphyrostomus (less likely). To stabilize the nomenclature, we here select as lectotype of Bulimus bovinus Bruguière, 1792 the specimen illustrated by Chemnitz (1786: pl. 121, figs 1039-1040); as this lectotype is lost, we designate the neotype of Limax fibratus (above) also as neotype of Bulimus bovinus Bruguière, 1792, which thus becomes an objective synonym.
